there are a ton of videos on youtube of people popping their zits and squeezing out decades-old blackheads from their noses.  i can’t help watching these — they’re so disgusting and yet also incredibly satisfying, like EVIL BE GONE.  last night i had a dream that i popped a huge zit.  i won’t describe how big it was because you might barf, but suffice it to say it was big.

i dreamed that i was in the lobby of an old building in nyc or downtown LA.  i noticed the security guard.  i realized that in real life she works in the thermal blanket shop making insulation for our spacecraft.  anyways, some guy walked into the lobby.  he was wearing blue fatigues and carried an assault rifle.  when he saw us, he raised the rifle and shot us both several times in the chest.  i woke up in the middle of the dream but i still thought i was shot.  i didn’t feel any pain, but i lay there in bed thinking i was dying.  after a few minutes i recognized that it was a dream and then i was relieved.

tibet

i awoke in a german hotel, built overlooking a glacier or maybe it was on an iceberg.  it was bright that day.  i remember that my sister had helped me try out a two-person sleeping bag that had two layers in it: one for warmth and one to seal in the warmth, and yet it didn’t seem that warm.  i was up at 7:30, but i knew i had to hurry, i had to be at the airport for a 10:30 flight to tibet for a wedding.  yet i took my time in the bathroom, leisurely brushing my teeth.  by the time i made it downstairs, i saw my parents in the banquet hall, and the bride and groom were dressed in traditional tibetan clothing while a group of children and teenagers serenaded them in a foreign language, probably tibetan.  soon, they left.  outside, workers were breaking up the glacier/iceberg, and huge pieces — big like crystal skyscrapers — began to float away and churn the water.  i wasted time watching this.  then i ran to my room and packed a few things.  i looked at my watch and saw that it was 9:30 and i began panicking.  i rushed around the hotel looking for someone who could help me call the airport to check in and ensure the plane would not leave without me.  i was stopped by a hotel attendant who directed me in german to please stand in line, but it was a line for a cruise ship, and his confusion wasted valuable minutes.  but then i stopped and watched a bunch of young bohemians make an impromptu abstract painting of ryan gosling and this didn’t seem like a waste of time.  i looked up and i saw a woman that i had never seen before in waking life.  we knew each other right away and kissed hello.  i think she was going to tibet, too, and i hoped that i would see her there.

fox

the only part of last night’s dream that i remember is this: a small man was talking to me with his pet silver fox standing at his side.  the man said a few words to the fox, who crawled up to the man’s shoulder like flowing mercury and perched there, tail wrapped around the man’s neck like a scarf, staring at me with icy eyes.

the world’s most boring cat burglar

the first thing i noticed was the bathroom.  the shiny new light switch had been swapped out for the old dingy one it had replaced.  this i thought was odd.  at the time, i was sharing the apartment with a woman with whom i had recently met, and so we were in that new-roommate stage where you are theoretically “just friends”, although still trying to figure out if it could “go anywhere” because she was really hot.  i showed her the switch in the bathroom and together we explored the rest of the apartment.  to our horror, we found that all over the apartment, electrical sockets were carefully removed, leaving behind detached multi-colored tentacles of electrical wire dangling where the sockets had been.  my roommate clutched onto me and we both shivered from fear and from something else.  a more detailed inspection revealed that no other items had been touched; it seemed that whoever this thief was, he or she was weirdly mundane in their selection.  and that was the part that scared me — when someone steals for no apparent reason, you wonder why they picked your place.  you wonder if they’re going to come back and steal your q-tips, your shoe liners, everything green, linoleum, your photo albums (but carefully leaving behind the photos).  i was thinking about these things that night when i went to bed with my roommate, leaving all the lights on.
